Let’s be honest—wall balls are a love-hate relationship (mostly hate). They’re one of those deceptively simple movements that can leave even the fittest athlete gassed. But what if it’s not the movement—it’s your technique?
At BayWay CrossFit, we coach our members to move with intention. So today’s Technique Tuesday is all about dialing in your wall ball efficiency—so you can breathe easier, move better, and finish faster.
🚫 Common Wall Ball Mistakes We See
Most people get crushed by wall balls for a few preventable reasons:
- Squatting too shallow or too deep. Both mess up your rhythm.
- Relying too much on the arms. This burns you out by round two.
- Chasing the ball down. This throws off your timing and form.

✅ How to Wall Ball the Right Way
1. Set up with a solid squat stance.
Treat your first rep like a strong air squat—feet under shoulders, chest up, and heels down. The wall ball starts with your legs.
2. Use your hips to launch the ball.
Don’t try to press the ball with just your arms. Instead, use the power from your squat to drive the ball upward. Arms are just the follow-through.
3. Catch it high, stay tall.
Avoid sinking too low or dropping your chest as you catch the ball. Catch it near your face, keep your elbows under, and ride the bounce into your next rep.
4. Don’t aim for the ceiling.
Your target is the wall, not outer space. Throw just above the line, not way over it.
💡 Pro Tip: Breath Control
Inhale as you lower into your squat, exhale as you throw the ball. Keep your breath synced with your reps, and you’ll stay more relaxed under fatigue.
