The Mind Is Its Own Place – How CrossFit and Jiujitsu Become Your Escape

There’s a line from Paradise Lost by John Milton that’s been stuck in my head lately:
“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.”

That quote hits hard — especially when life feels heavy. We all go through seasons where stress, self-doubt, and pressure make it feel like the world is stacked against us. For me, these past few weeks have been just that. But I’ve also been reminded that inside the walls of a gym or on a jiujitsu mat, you can take that weight and turn it into something powerful.

At BayWay CrossFit, we see this every day. Members show up with the weight of the world on their shoulders — work stress, family chaos, personal struggles — and they leave just a little lighter. Not because their problems disappeared, but because they chose to lean in, move their body, and train their mind.

Your Gym Can Be Heaven… or Hell

Here’s the thing: the workout doesn’t change. The barbell doesn’t care how your day went. The WOD on the whiteboard isn’t easier or harder based on your mood.
But your mindset? That’s everything.

You can walk in thinking:

  • “This is going to suck.”
  • “I’m too tired.”
  • “Why even bother today?”

Or you can flip the script and say:

  • “This is where I fight back.”
  • “This is where I remind myself who I am.”
  • “This is my one hour to breathe and push.”

That shift — that mental reframe — turns the same exact workout from something that feels like hell into something that feels like heaven. Or as I like to call it… hella heaven.

CrossFit and Jiujitsu as Therapy

For many of us in Baytown, the gym has become our therapy. Whether it’s throwing down in a CrossFit class or rolling on the mats at jiujitsu, it’s more than just a workout — it’s an escape. A reset. A reminder that we’re stronger than our struggles.

That’s why I recorded this episode of Ranting With Rich. I get personal about recent challenges, and how showing up at the gym — even when life feels impossible — helps me reset my mind. This episode is about why the gym matters so much more than just sets and reps.
