Staying Fit as a Dad: More Than Just Workouts
Being a dad is a full-time job, but that doesn’t mean we should neglect taking care of ourselves. For me, staying fit is about more than just hitting the gym—it’s about being present for my kids, physically and mentally. I’ve found two major reasons why staying fit as a dad has become so important to me, and I hope this resonates with other dads out there.
1. Being Able to Play with My Kids
There’s nothing better than getting out and playing with my kids. Whether it’s running around at the park, shooting hoops, or just kicking a soccer ball around, these are the moments I cherish. Right now, I take my 10- and 7-year-old to practice a couple of times a week. Even though I haven’t helped much on the field, I’m happy that I can if needed. The last thing I want is to be in a situation where I’m on the sidelines because I’m out of shape.
Staying fit allows me to be ready for whatever life throws at me, whether it’s coaching a practice or just having the energy to keep up with their boundless enthusiasm. I never want to be in a position where my body holds me back from fully engaging in their lives.
2. Setting an Example for My Kids
Kids watch everything we do. They are little mirrors, reflecting our habits, behaviors, and attitudes. I never want my kids to look at me and see someone who has let themselves go or doesn’t prioritize health. I want them to see a dad who takes care of his body and mind, someone who values staying active and being strong.
Let’s face it—kids think the cool dads are the ones who look jacked and can jump in on the action at a moment’s notice. That’s the dad I aim to be. Not because I want to look good (though, hey, that’s a nice perk), but because I want to show them that fitness is a lifelong commitment. I want them to grow up understanding that taking care of their health is non-negotiable, just like I hope they’ll see in me.
Fitness Is a Family Commitment
I’m not perfect, and there are days when balancing work, family, and fitness feels like a juggling act. But I always remind myself why I do it. I stay fit so I can be an active, engaged dad and to set the best possible example for my kids.
At BayWay CrossFit, we believe that fitness isn’t just about hitting personal records—it’s about being there for the ones we love. So, to all the dads out there, let’s keep pushing ourselves, not just for our own health but for our kids, too. They’re watching, and they’ll follow our lead.
