BayWay CrossFit whiteboard explaining protein, muscle building, fat loss, and body composition in Baytown, Texas.v
One of the biggest things I see with people trying to lose weight is that they get so caught up in the number on the scale that they forget what they’re actually trying to accomplish. Think about it for a second. Do you really care if you weigh 175 pounds instead of 185? Or do you care more about how you look in the mirror, how your clothes fit, and how you feel? For most people I think it’s the second one. And that’s where I think a lot of people get nutrition wrong. Losing Weight and Losing Fat Are Two Different Things Let’s say we have two people who both weigh 175 pounds. One has a higher percentage of body fat and less muscle. The other has more muscle and less body fat. Same exact weight. But they are going to look completely different. This is what we call body...

CrossFit athlete resting after a workout at BayWay CrossFit in Baytown TX, representing strength, resilience and overcoming life's challenges.
I was watching a video the other day and heard Stephen Colbert say something that really stuck with me. “It is a gift to exist. And with existence comes suffering.” I don’t know why but that statement really got me thinking. I’ve heard plenty of people talk about how life is a gift, and I think most of us would agree with that. But it was the second part that really caught my attention. With existence comes suffering. It’s such a simple statement but when you really think about it, it’s something that we all have to accept. No matter who you are, how much money you make, how healthy you are or how good of a person you try to be, you’re going to suffer at some point in your life. And I think that’s something we have a hard time accepting. We spend so much of our lives...

Noelia Cantu at BayWay CrossFit beside the headline Nervous About Starting CrossFit?
When people think about trying CrossFit, they usually think about the workouts. The weights. The pull-ups. Whether they’ll be able to keep up. But when I hear our members talk about why they keep coming back, a lot of the time they’re talking about the people. Noelia Cantu recently shared her experience after about two months at BayWay CrossFit. She talked about something she’s proud of, being able to lift weights overhead. She also talked about the encouragement she gets here and what she would tell somebody who’s nervous about trying a class. Hear it from Noelia herself: Watch Noelia’s BayWay CrossFit story on YouTube That’s worth hearing if you’ve been thinking about starting. Because looking at a gym from the outside doesn’t tell you much about what it’s like to be in the room. You might see somebody lifting a weight you couldn’t lift. Or doing a movement you...

Water bottle and electrolyte packet in a gym beside the headline “Do You Really Need Electrolytes Every Day?” with BayWay CrossFit branding.
Electrolytes are everywhere right now. Powders, packets, tablets, drinks. Everybody seems to have something you’re supposed to add to your water. And if you listen to enough advertising, you’d think plain water stopped working. So do you actually need electrolytes every day? Your body does. But that doesn’t mean you need an electrolyte supplement every day. There’s a difference. Electrolytes are minerals, including sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, that help your body manage fluids, send nerve signals and make muscles work. You get them from what you eat and drink. They aren’t something that only comes in a packet. For most healthy people on a normal day, regular meals and enough water cover the basics. An electrolyte drink can be useful, but it doesn’t automatically improve your hydration just because you added it to your bottle. And around here, we need to talk about what a “normal day” actually looks...

Richard and JC building a sandcastle at the beach, with the words Be Thankful You Can Move
I would give just about anything to do the workout you’re thinking about skipping today. Even if it has burpees. Even if it’s running. Even if it’s the kind of workout you look at and immediately start figuring out how you’re going to avoid it. Right now I cant do CrossFit. I cant do jiujitsu, play soccer, or run races with Cloud. All the things I enjoy doing have been put on hold while I wait for surgery. It feels like my body hates me right now and honestly, it’s starting to mess with my head. I’m watching what I eat. Most days I’m eating less than 2,000 calories, trying to get enough protein, and going 12 hours or more overnight without eating. I’m paying attention. But my activity has dropped so much, and I’m still watching my weight go up and my muscle tone go away. The frustrating part...
