I have worked in the fitness industry for the last eight years, and one thing that has remained constant is, people come, and people go. Many times people come back, but here recently I have seen more and more try to do CrossFit on their own at their house or at a globo gym. Anyone that knows my background in CrossFit knows how obsessed I am with this program, and how much I love to exercise. In 2011, I got my CrossFit Level 1 certification and immediately thought I needed to do more. I decided to cancel my CrossFit gym membership and outfit my garage with as much CrossFit equipment as I could afford. *disclaimer: it was my mother’s garage. In my mind, I justified creating a home gym by crunching the numbers and convincing myself of how much money I would save. Telling myself that I would not have...

Since The Open I think the general thought around the gym is, “Let’s get better,” but the real question is how do we get better for next year?   The first step is just showing up. I know I have been on this topic a lot lately, but it is the easiest way to get better. When explaining our program structure to people, I usually tell them it is like school. What I mean is our curriculum is very broad, and like school, you have to show up to learn. You would not sign up for calculus, show up three to four times a month and expect to pass the final. You have to show up and learn and do the work given to you. Many times there is homework that needs to be done to make sure that you are advancing as you should. If you show up and...

The Open is over, and I am finally getting back into the swing of things.   The Open this year was probably the most fun I have had with anyone to date. It was the first time that I was just an ordinary CrossFitter. Enjoying the workouts and testing myself when I could. This was the first year that our gym did a Friday Night Lights event each week and It was a huge hit.   Competing while injured is tough, mainly when you doing everything at 110% is your usual path. There were many times this year where I thought I would not be able to do something and surprised myself. This Open in many ways reminded me of when I first started CrossFit. I was unsure of what I was going to be able to do in each workout so I just kind of winged each one. No...

This is a post outside of my usual scope of just talking about fitness or how to be better at fitness. Recently I posted an article written by Ray Allen where he writes a letter to his younger self, telling the thirteen-year-old version of himself to keep working and keep working hard. The article had me thinking about my younger years and how those years shaped who I am today. After some self-reflection I realized my younger life revolved entirely around sports, and sports are the reason I am who I am today. Sports taught me everything. How to win, how to lose, how to make friends, how to work with people I don’t like but most of all it taught me how to work hard. I believe more than anyone that some people are born with raw talent, but I also think that not everyone is born with the...

I was out with some friends the other day, and we got into a conversation about weight-loss and weight loss supplements. I listened to what they ate, how they exercised and what their sleeping habits were. Towards the end of our conversation, we got on the topic of weight loss supplements, and through the conversation, I realized that many people do not understand that weight loss is not a “quick fix” and that supplements promising fast weight loss do not work.   Most weight loss pills are built around the fancy word “thermogenic.” The basics of a thermogenic are they will raise the temperature of your body hoping to increase your body’s ability to burn fat. The problem with this is that it can cause more serious issues than favorable results.  The reason I bring up these supplements is that they promise rapid weight loss much like most diet plans....
